or in the amount of heat pro- duced in the contact, should be reduced as much as possible. This can be achieved either through design or through the choice of suitable lubricant (see Sect. 4.. Measures such as super nishing (polishing) and lapping (see Sect. 6.6.3.2 ) can also have positive effect. Lubricant and additive properties are determinant factors in scufng resistance; they can be examined and evaluated by means of one of the FZG scufng tests [FVA2 ]. The failure load reached in the test, or the corresponding torque and the gear geometry, are used to determine permissible temperature which is then compared to the actual temperature occurring during operation. Table 4.1provides an overview of number of international standards and calcu- lation methods: The input variables for these standardized calculation methods are the macro geometry, the applied load and rotation speed of the gear set, and the material andlubricant specications. The results are safety factors representing the ratio ofstrength to stress, thereby making it possible to state the load capacity of gearwhen subjected to particular load. The required minimum safety factors must beagreed between the supplier and the customer. The following sections describe the calculation methods to determine the tooth root load capacity (see Sect. 4.2.4 ) and pitting resistance (see Sect. 4.2.5 ) according to the FVA-project No. 4 Hypoid load capacity [ FVA4 ]. These methods are part of [ ISO1 ] as Method B1 since 2 and allow calculations for hypoid gears whereas only non-offset bevel gears could be calculated with most of olderstandards like [ DIN3 ,AGMA2 ] and edition 2 of ISO 1. At present there are no internationally standardized methods to calcula
