completely blocked the development of all types of insects during storage period of 1 year. Irradiation treatment had no adverse

effects on the appearance or taste of any sample. It was observed that packaging of dried fruits in amber bottles

or black/ silver polyethylene protected the color of dried fruits better. These results indicated thatthe packaging of dry fruits in

colored packages provided better protection for the qualityof fruits. Dates are important commodities in international commercial trading. Among the main

factors affecting the quality of dates are insects. These pests damage the date fruit externally and internally and limit the export capability of these nutritive fruits. Before shipping, dry dates are usually disinfested by using methyl bromide, fumigant that isnot easy to handle and requires certain precautions. Ahmed and coworkers ( carriedout an experiment with low radiation doses (0.3, 0.7, and 1.0 kGy) combined with heat(4C) or cold (2 ) treatment in comparison with fumigation and irradiation alone (0.7 kGy) for insect disinfestation of dates. This study demonstrated that treatment with irradiation alone (0.7 kGy) resulted in complete killing of insects only after storage period that exceeded 1 month. However, high degree of killing was achieved within ashort period when unirradiated products were held at 4 and irradiated at the lowest dose of irradiation (0.3 kGy) (Table . Therefore, combination treatment of low dosesof gamma irradiation and heat would be advantageous if short storage period of timeis required to cause complete kill of insects in dates, instead of using somewhat high doses which might render radiation disinfestation of dried dates prohibitive. The use of dose in excess of 4kGy (dose for decontamination) can modify the texture due to the conversionof pectin substances. If there is need, improvement of sensory characteristics can beobtained by irradiating at very low temperatures (Urbain, . 7.2 Fresh Fruits a
