echanical classication include: 1. Separation of immature grains from paddy, either before the parboiling process, or to maximize the efciency

of the husking and bran removal processes thatwill follow. 2. Removal of objectionable seeds, such as red rice, that are

thicker than rice kernel. 3. Separation of broken grains from whole grains. The removal of objectionable seeds and the classication

of broken grains usually occur later in the rice-milling process. These processes will be discussed later in thischapter. To remove

immature grains, which are thinner than normal grains, thickness grader equipped with slotted cylinders is used. The cross-section of thickness grader equipped with six slotted cylinders is shown in Fig. 3. 2.3 Husking and Husk Aspiration The efciencies of the husking, paddy separation, and husking of return paddy are so interdependent that it is difcult to consider them separately. Any analysis of problemsin brown rice preparation must consider the system as whole. Still, it is necessary tounderstand each individual operation. 2.3.1 Paddy Huskers and Husk Aspirators Paddy is fed into the gap between two rubber rollers that are rotating at different speeds and in opposite directions. Compression provides the necessary normal force to causefriction between the paddy and the surface of the rubber rolls. Because of this friction,each side of the paddy grain attempts to travel at the same linear speed as its correspondingroll. Because this is impossible, the husk is sheared or ruptured and falls away as the grainis released from the rolls. typical mechanism of the paddy husker is shown in Fig. 4.
