The development of environmental technology processes, in particular, expands the room for action in environmental policy. The legislators can use the performance profiles of the new environmental technologies for updating environmental law and establish them in new gen- eral legislative data (.. reduced emission limits, new state of theart).Theenvironmental tech- nology sector has to cover relatively broad and, at the same time, heterogeneous field in this process. Therefore, since 1, environmental research and technology has been the subject of special promotion by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) in its key area of pro- motion 2. On behalf of the BMFT, the ECOTEC institute has ascertained the results of the promotion of application-oriented research in the environmental technologysectorobtained in this key field of promotion by the end of 1 and has drawn up an inte'rim balance (Analysis of the actual situation). The particular aim was to quantif the sponsored process developments in terms of their nature and their implementation in indktrial practice, and also as re ards their economic and ecological effectiveness. This makes it possible to assess the value oypast promotion and derive criteria for future procedures. 2.
