Givena choice of grades for end use, quantities purchased increase and, at the sametime, encourage competition between buyers and sellers and also between thebuyers, regardless of size (quantity). 8 DISADVANTAGES OF GRADING SYSTEM FOR GRAINS The grading systems for grains were developed and improved in various countries with variations according to geographic locations, climatic factors, political environment, andthe technological changes taking place in farming, storage, and preservation. The local demand and global trade also inuence the grading system. Owing to these various factors, the grading systems undergo changes from time to time and can have the following disad-vantages, such as. 1. The number of grades provided for each grain is debatable issue. An excessive number of grades means smaller quantity would fall in each grade. Increased number of segregations (grades) effectively reduces the throughput capacity of the handling and transporting system. For each grade that requires physicalsegregation, separate binning at the elevator represents cost to the system anda constraint to the elevator capacity and space. In practice, only few gradesmay be handled whereas many would remain on the shelf to be used in onlyunique situations. 2. Moisture content, although not grading factor, decides the monetary returns to the producer. For example, in the Canadian system wheat is classed as straight (1.5% wet basis [wb]), tough (1.6.0% wb), and damp (greater than 1.0%wb). The grain that is tough or damp has to be dried and segregated. This means additional handling, drying, and operating cost and can interfere with throughputof the elevator if not carefully planned.
