According to officials of VDMA, it is not the average age of the total machinery that is important, "but the age of the key machinery in gear manufacturing - cutting, grinding, milling machinery; measurement devices, heat treatment equipment." 6 The VDMA estimates that the average age of these key machines in the West German gear industry is less than 1 years old. Key gear-making machinery in Korea and Taiwan is much newer than that in the United States.
