increased pro ortionalt to the increased loads with share of 1% by volume. The test substancetoluene aEo continuously yielded efficiencies

of around 8% upto higher levels of loading. All told, it can be established for the test substances that, compared

with activated sludge without absorption auxiliaries, the addition of approx. 1% by volume silicone oil to the activated slud in

bioscrubber improves solubility by factor of 1. How- ever, dimensioning of bioscrubters is not recommended without preliminary trials, because totally

satisfactory explanations for some of the observations made cannot yet be given, despite the trials performed. 1 Duration: 0 1 VQ8 Subject: Development of process for controlled biodegradation of odorants and pollutants in waste air, using the fermentation industry as an example Research centre: Versuchs- und Lehranstalt fur Spiritusfabrikation und Fermentationstechnologte Seestrasse 1,1 Berlin Government sponsorship: DM 8,8 8 Sponsorship ratio: 6% 0 0 8 - 3 0 9 1. Purpose of the project The biological purification of waste air is mainly used for the problem of odour reduction in waste gases, which exists in many industrial branches. These highly odorous waste gases are of an organic nature and arise, interalia, in plants which process foods and luxur goods using drying and/or roastin processes (starch factories, coffee roasting facilities, kdder plants, sugar factories, yeast Tactories, breweries, distilleries). Theaim of the project is theeffective biological purification of odorantsand pollutants in waste air, using the fermentation industry as an example, .. distilleries, breweries and yeast facto- ries. The development of sin le or multi-stage process is envisaled. In the case of thesin le stage process, the removal oqpollutants from the waste air an their biodegradation tale; place simultaneously in single reactor (simultaneously an absorption plant and bioreactor). The multi-stage process is split into
