If biode radable plastics are produced based on renewable raw materials, protection of non- renewazle resources can possibly be obtained. The agricultural areas needed for the produc- tion of these renewable raw materials could easily be made available. In addition, the use of renewable raw materials is contribution towards the reduction of agricultural overproduc- tion. 2 The use of biodegradable plastics offers the possibility to compost used materials. So far only very little experience has been made in this regard. Research results on the degradation of Bio- pol lead one to expect complete mineralization of this plastic. Butthere are uncertaintiescon- cerning the completeness of the degradability of mixtures of starch and non-biodegradable components. With the regulation about avoiding paikaging waste (cabinet resolution from November 1th the Federal Republic of Germany aims to reduce packaging waste. The goal ofthe regu- lation is also the recycling of packa ing material waste as far as possible.Thefirst estimation of the substitution potential is about~5,OOO under the assumption that there will be technical improvements and with possibleapplications in the food sector even up to 5,0 . With this background, the use of largeramounts of biodegradable packa ing material is only sensible if business and consumers separate and collect organic waste an3biodegradable plastics and if recycling facilities are available. In the future it is possible that the use of biodegradable plastics will not be limited to the pack- aging area. Initial experiences and further development ideas are coming from Japan.
