tain.In industrial practice, it is still necessary to rely on metrological tests in order tojudge the dynamic compliance behavior of machine tools [ BREC0.1 ]. Optimization procedures can sometimes be derived directly from the measured results. Therefore, it is necessary that research and development predict the struc- tural properties of machine as far as possible during development of the machine such that optimization can be introduced early in the process, and time- and cost-intensive design adaptations can be avoided [ BREC0 ]. This chapter is intended to provide an overview of the fundamental character- istics of static and dynamic machine behavior, to present state of the art methods inmetrological analysis, and to discuss special features involved in examining gearcutting machines. Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2 . Klingelnberg (ed.), Bevel Gear , DOI 1.1/9-3-6-4-0_8 8.2 Static Machine Behavior The size and form accuracy of work piece is partly determined by the static compliance behavior of machine. Metrological investigations analyze the relative displacements at the cutting point in response to simulated static process loads. For example, in the case of milling machine, steadily increasing force is applied between the machine table and the spindle. sensor is used to record the resulting displacement between the spindle and the table, subsequently allowing load- deection behavior to be represented in chart form as static curve (Fig. 8. [BREC0.1 ]. Once the clearances at the bearings, guides and joining points have been overcome, the compliance of the system generally declines as the load increases. This is caused by non-linear conditions at these contact points. When the force is relieved, hysteresis is often present as result of changed contact parameters, such that the relief load-deection curve and the force load-deection curve do not coincide. In order to characterize three-dimensional compliance behavior, static compliance is determined
