concerned basic research Objective was to investigate into the parameters governing the behaviour of sinking and sunken hazardous substances in

the hydrosphereand to elaborate fundamental recommendations forthe development of means and strategiesfor the control of such substances after their accidental release into the hydrosphere The & project was restricted to chemicals transshipped in German coastal waters Special emphasis had to be put on the disposal of large uantities of contaminated soil which will be an undesired by-product of any recovery proce8ure of sunken chemicals and which according to todays understandin has to be classified as hazardous waste Although the treatment of hazardous waste haszeen one of the main subjects of this study the preventive reduction of this by-product already during recovery processes has been considered as well 2.
