Standard Samples Most factors considered in grading must be determined by visual examination. To provide comparison to assist in grading, or to set grading levels, standard samples are prepared 4 Hulasare et al. annually for all grain grades dened in Schedule III of the regulations and for any other special grades (under Classes 2 and 3 of grade denitions) established by the CGC. Allstandard samples are prepared by the CGCs inspection division and are submitted toStandard Committees for review. The committees recommend specications for gradesof grain, and select and recommend standard samples to the CGC for consideration and approval. To prepare the standard samples for each grade, quantities of grain from the current crop are obtained from primary elevators and from railcars unloading at terminalelevators. The samples represent characteristics of the major grading factors of that grow-ing season and are cross section from all production areas. The term standard in the Canadian grading system, thus means minimum visual quality (CGC, . There are two distinctly different types of samples prepared each year: the primary standard samples and the export standard samples. Because the two samples are used for different purposes, their preparation procedures are different. 4.3.1 Primary Standard SampleA primary standard sample is prepared for each statutory grade of grain listed in Schedule III of the Canada Grain Regulations and for any other grades the CGC considers appro-
