Ocean Signal has launched new emergency po - sition indicating rescue beacon, SafeSea EPIRB1 Pro, which is about 3% smaller than other units, has ten-year battery life and price that makes it one of the most affordable EPIRBs on the market, the company claims. The float-free unit releases automatically from its Category 1 Auto Deploy Bracket once submerged in water as vessel founders and, when floating on the surface, transmits distress message to relevant search and rescue au-thorities. The unit, weighing only 4g, is 1mm high, 8mm wide and 1mm deep. It operates on the three-system Cospas-Sarsat satellite-based search and rescue inter governmental cooperative based in Montreal, and will use the latest genera - tion of Meosar medium-earth orbit satellites which are de-signed to pick up distress sig - nals in almost real time and with greater accuracy. Using this network will provide bea - con location accuracy to within 1m within five minutes of the distress signal 9% of the time. The SafeSea EPIRB1 Pro pro - vides location data in three ways through an integrated 6-channel GPS receiver; with 1.5 MHz homing beacon; and by powerful LED strobe light to provide maximum vis - ibility in poor light. Once ac - tivated, the EPIRB transmits location and unique user ID information via satellite to Rescue Coordination Centre for transfer to appropriate res - cue services. It can operate for 4 hours across temperature range from -2C to 5C and is waterpro
