Purpose of the project Conventional pulping processes are burdened with serious disadvantages. The leading sulfate process producing 8% of the total world wide pulp production is able to produce pulps with excellent strength properties based on broad raw material spectrum. The arising air and water ollution is considerable and exceeds by far the limits fixed by legislation in Germany. From ths point of view the sulfite process applied in Germany exclusively can be classified more favorable. The raw material basis of this process is reduced considerably and sulfite pulps have lower strength compared to kraft pulps. Actually in Germany pulp production is exclu- sively based on spruce and beech. The prospective further tightening of the permitted emis- sions for air and water and the resulting increment of the water pollution fee will continue to weaken the international competitiveness of the German pulp industry. In order to open the German pulp industr chance to survive it is required to develop new low emission pulping processes which are ahe to use broad raw material basis and produce pulp quality which corresponds at leastto kraft pulp. The industrial acceptance of these pulpin processes depends, apart from the economical competitiveness, on the possibility to bleac these pulps without chlorine containing bleaching agents. O
