s usually the start position for the generating process. The machine then generates till the end roll position, the tool

is withdrawn from the tooth slot and returned to the starting position for another plunge. Meanwhile the machine does one

indexing turn and is ready for the next tooth slot (Fig. 6.. Fig. 6.1 Elements of the plunge cutting process6.2

Cutting of Spiral Bevel Gears 2 On bevel gears cut with the continuous indexing method, the tool which is employed

determines the best plunge position. With two-blade-per-group cutter head, plunging is made near the middle of the generating zone since it is there that the inner and outer blades are cutting under the same load and, if at all, to slight extent with the secondary cutting edge (Fig. 6. which has unfavorable cutting properties. On three-blade-per-group cutter head, plunge cutting preferentially occurs at the heel to let the pre-cutter remove as much stock as possible from the tooth slot. The pre-cutter is usually the rst blade in the group to enter the tooth slot, but is somewhat shortened in height such that it cannot work effectively if it is plunged in another position. In the continuous indexing method, the nal plunge cutting position is often not the rst generating position which must then be reached by rotating the cradle. In compensation however, contrary to the single indexing method, all the tooth slots have been nished at the end of the generating process and the machine can return in rapid traverse to the initial position in order to change work piece. There are, of course, different ways to design the plunge cutting process. On CNC machines, chip thickness and cutting speed can be altered depending on the depth position. Clean cutting at the end of the plunge is also possible. The same is true for the generating process. 6.2.5.5 Generating Process Without Plunge Cutting This process for generated spiral bevel gears comprises at least one complete generating cycle which is necessary to ac
