n the presence of organic chlorine compounds in the fuel. Specialattentionwas paid to polyvinylchloride(PVC)which often isusedasanelementofther- moplastic coatin foils as well as for edges and furniture fittings. Pure PVC possesses high contentofchlorije(approx.5%).Asthemeasuring resultsshow,the bound chlorideisalmost completely transformed into HCI gas. Calculations reveal that already approx. 0,0% of PVC in the fuel is sufficient to generate HCI concentrations in the fuel gas of 3 mg/m3 according to the limit value of the "TA Luft '8*. .~ .. . . . .. . . . ~ .~ 1 Further investigations showed that fluorine drogen (HF) in fuel ases of combustion plants run on wood -even during the combustion oTboards with KHF2 ac?dLtive- has no significance. When burning wood residues containing nitrogen-based plastics, several organic nitrogen compounds were dectectable in the flue gas. The combustion tests with PVC-coated particle- boards led to other results. The only chloride organic compound found was benzene chloride, but it was only of secondary importance with re ard to the concentration. From these results may be derived that during combustion of PVC # bound chlorine emits in an early phase of the thermal conversion as hydrogen chloride, so that the chlorine contributes only to short extent to the later thermal conversion reaction of the hydrocarbon structures of the wood or the plastic respectively. This behaviour possibly is combined with the fact that there is no relation between the PVC content in the residues of waste combustion and the dioxine content in the flue gas. Thus the question regarding the causes for the formation of dioxines in wood residue combustion plants - which was not subiect of the present programme - gains in significance.
