like radial run-out and pitch deviations, deviations in gear tooth topography from the desired form affect only the amplitudes and harmonics of the mesh order. Figure 5.2 shows an ease-off, the contact pattern with the path of contact, the transmission error and the corresponding order spectrum of bevel gear set with conventional topography design. The ease-off shows simple lengthwise and prole crowning, usual for non-optimized designs. The transmission error is parabolic curve; the amplitudes of the rst to the fourth mesh order correspond to 8, 2, 9 and 6 % of the transmission error amplitude. In this case, the manufacturing deviation tilts the ease-off, shifting the contact pattern into the heel-tip zone on the tooth of the wheel. The form of the transmission error changes from parabolic to saw-tooth curve. Although in this example the absolute value of the maximum mesh transmission error remains unchanged when compared to the original value, the relative amplitude levels for the rst to the fourth mesh orders are altered. The rst order amplitude has only 6 % of the maximum mesh transmission error as compared to the former 8 %. Conversely, the values for the other three orders increase. Studies have shown that topography deviations which can be described by second order surfaces mainly affect changes in the rst four mesh orders. It is evident from the example shown that an analysis of the transmission error in one mesh cycle allows conclusions to be drawn on the type of topography deviations involved.
