as double oats are being removed by disk separator later on in the gradingprocess. 3.3.3 Hulling Operation In this part

of the process the inedible hulls that protect the kernel of oat are removed. If the natural moisture content of

oats before the hulling process is higher it will be moredifcult to hull. The ease with which hulls can be

removed from the oat kernel is referredto as hullability . Therefore, the oats with higher natural moisture have relatively poor hullability. The converse is also true. In the cleaning section the use of clipper machine,which cuts off the ends of the oats, helps to improve the hullability of the oats. The hulling efciency , also referred to as hulling degree , is the quantity of hulled kernels expressed as percentage of the total oats. This operation is considered very criticalto oat millers. Just as in wheat our milling higher yield of white rened our is impor-tant, similarly in oat processing higher yield of oat groats is critical. In the hulling operation, therefore, the following factors must be very carefully con- sidered to ensure the highest degree of performance: 1. All the oat grain must be dehulled. 2. There is none or minimum of broken material created. Although these two points are attainable together up to point, beyond that their relation becomes inversely proportional. Therefore, in any hulling operation there will always bea small percentage of unhulled grain as well as small percentage of broken material thatwill remain following the hulling activity. The performance of given hulling operationcan thus be evaluated on the basis of how high the aforementioned point becomes, in terms of hulling efciency, before the percentage of broken material begins to incr
