For an annual roduction of about 4 Mill. of woodbased materials in the Federal Republic of Germany this represents quantity of approx. 8.0 to 1.2.0 to be disposed of. The most suitable solution to dispose of these residues is the energetic utilization Incineration plants running on wood and wood residues often emit large quantities of pollu- tants, mostly due to emissionsfrom hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide resultingfrom incom- plete combustion. While there exist numerous scientific findings about such emissions durin combustion of pure wood, emissions during the combustion of plastic-containing woo8 based residuesare not yet thoroughly investi ated Within the frameworkof theresearch pro- ject investigations were carried out on the polttant7enerated during the combustion of plas- tic-containing wood-based materials (particleboar , fibreboards, Rlywood) and emitted to theenvironment via the flue gas in comparison to untreated wo0d. results ofthe investiga- tions should allow an evaluation of the emission situation in industry and small.enterprises and show possibilities to descrease or to eliminate polluting emissions. ~ ~ 2. Wo"rking steps The working programme is divided into three parts. In the first part the composition of the flue gases during the incineration of uncoated woodbased materials was investigated. Essential test variants were the type of wood-based material and the nature of the binder used. In the second part the emissions during the incineration of coated wood residues were investigated. The combustion tests necessary forthis artical project mostly were carried out in combus- tionfacilitywith low powerrating ownetby the institute.
