Purpose of the project In the production of cement clinker, trace elements are also continuously fed into the cement kiln plant with the raw material, as well as with the admixtures and fuel. The extent to which these trace elements found in the burning process are incorporated in the cement clinker depends on their chemical properties and the respective chemical environment, primarily in the preheater of the cement kiln plant. In the preheater and kiln inlet region of the plant,several environmentally-relevant trace elements form volatile compounds which cannot penetrate the thermal barrier to the hotter kiln regions, but form material cycle on the material being burned and the kiln dust particles via evaporation and condensation cycles. These dusts enter the electrostatic precipitator, which operates at very high separation levels, and are recirculat- ed, so that an external material cycle arises with further accumulation. The aim of the projects is the suppression, or at least the extensive reduction, of the formation of annular coatin via suitable reaction control, expedient selection of charges and admix- tures and by tecznical modification of the kiln plant. In cooperation with the lnstitut fur Chemische Technik of Karlsruhe University, the acquisition of scientific data concerning the composition and structure of the annular coatings is tar eted as further goal of the rojects. Statements concerning the chemical behaviour of thealjalis and of heavy metals, sucRas lead and thallium, in the course of the process are included in this context. Furthermore, the bond types (specification) of the respective elements are to be determined, particularly in the elec- trostatic precipitator dust, as well as in the clean gas dust. 2.
