safety, inspection, and quality grades for agricul- tural commodities and food (Table 1; Kader, 1; Canada Agricultural Products Act);so as

to regulate trade and provide standardized coding for the various grade categories at least within country. Import and export grades

or categories are usually dened by the same legislation. Further regulations may be enacted within subfederal jurisdictions(state, provincial), which may have impact as well (Kader, 1; Table . In Canada,the regulations have general provisions relating to the edible nature of the food, its health and safety attributes, and irradiation and packaging regulations. Packaging regulationspertain to branding, weights and measures, grade name displays, and display material generally. Further regulations relate to inspection procedures, administrative authority, fees, and provision for forfeiture and seizure. These regulations can be obtained by writing to the appropriate government depart- ment or agency, but with the widespread use and availability of the Internet, governmentsare increasingly making the pertinent regulations available through this source. Table 1is listing of websites encountered during the preparation of this chapter. The list is notexhaustive but should begin to provide useful, quick access to government regulations concerning fruit and vegetables. Many websites are under construction and in state of ux but clearly will be major source of regulatory information in the future.
