Tanker accidents in other ocean regions have shown that the spillage of large amounts of oil results in extensive and long-term ecological damage. The effects of large-scale oil spill in the German Bight would be particularly serious, due to the fact that the biotopes of the tidal flats are highly sensitive to oil contamination. The economicdamage would also be consi- derable. The costs resulting from very large oil spills can be in the thousand millions. The goal of the sponsored projects was to meet the long-term technical require- ments for effectively combatting oil and chemical contamination, particularly under the unfavourable operating conditions which frequently predominate in the North Sea. Essential technical requirements for efficiently combatting oil and chemical spills were also lacking for the special conditions existing in the German tidal flats. The research and development projects were carried out in the following sub-areas: 1. Vehicles and equipment for cleaning up oil spills under unfavourable operating 2.
