t activity issimulated bytheaddition ofSO, Hydrocarbonsareadded tostudytheir behaviouron the catalysts Pollutant measurements are being made under realistic conditions in field trials on industrial- scale SCR plants Particular effects observed in the field trials are examined more closely in lab- matory trials ) Pollutant prevention An assessment of the pollutant emission of various catalysts and processes is being conducted If necessary, suitable remedial measures are compiled This also includes measures geared towards the reduction of NH, losses 3. Results The essential results are as follows: 1. Industrial SCR catalysts for NO, reduction on the basis of zeolites or V2/W0/ Ti0 ("Japan" catalysts) activate partial oxidation of the hydrocarbons in hydrocarbon-bearing waste gases, primarilyforming CO and COz. When using"Japan"cata1ystsforthe reduction of NO, in diesel waste gases, for example, CO formation clearly exceeds the limit values stipulated in the Technical Directive on Air Pollution. Downstream installation of an oxida- tion catalyst is necessary in order to eradicate this side effect. Thus, the use of catalyst combination (multifunction catalyst) is always necessary in order to reduce pollutants in diesel waste gases. 2. Industrial SCR catal sts, which are almost always used in S0-bearing waste ases, display high de ree of subhation-induced surface acidity. soth CO oxidation and $Oformation are comp?etely inhibited. On the other hand, SCR catalysts with amphoteric surface prop- erties possessa considerable capacityforC0 oxidation in theabsence of 5,coupledwith marked N2O formation. Platinum-bearing SCR catalysts lead to extremely high levels of N2 emission and, therefore, cannot be used. 1 Duration: Subject: Kinetic investigation of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides using transition metal catalysts Research centre: lnstitut fur Chemische Technik der Unt Karlsruhe KatserstraOe 1, 7 3 Karlsruhe Gov
