utting and windrowing mechanisms. Such reapers, withdifferent designs of chassis and power transmission systems, powered by 2.2- to 3.8-kW diesel/gasoline

engine are manufactured by numerous companies in India and abroad. The front-mounted, powertiller-operated riding-type Chinese vertical conveyor reaper ( was

probably the rst successful reaper that used the reciprocating-type cutter-bar of 1.6- width. The design and construction of each component

was the same as thatof the CAAMSIRRI 1.0- reaper. This machine was supplied to Indonesia, the Philip-pines, and Thailand for

tests and feasibility trials under different eld and agroclimaticconditions, such as dry eld transplanted, wet eld transplanted, and upland eld direct seeded. The performance of the machine was very good in dry eld and in upland eld conditions where the crop was broadcasted, directly seeded, or transplanted. The averageeld capacity was 0.2 ha/, little less than the expected value of 0.3 ha/, probablybecause of more time loss in turning and positioning the machine (. The machinecapacity was increased with plot size, and the recommended minimum plot size was statedas 0.1 ha, below which the capacity fell very abruptly. In wet elds, the performance of the machine was not very satisfactory. The control and mobility of the machine were affected by the irregularity of the hard pan. The machine, even with the cage wheels, usedto bog down and trampled over the crop area. Hence, except for the difculty of operationin wet eld, there was no specic problem in cutting and windrowing of paddy or wheatcrops. In paddy-growing countries, power tillers of 2.2- to 9.0-kW capacity are very com- mon with the farmers for rototilling and puddling operations. To make the power tiller more versatile machine, the use of front-mounted vertical conveyorreaperwindrower based on the CAAMSIRRI design has been reported (1,2,5, as very encouragingboth in paddy as well as in wheat elds.
