Purpose of the project Various anthropogenic activities, such as industry, heating, traffic and agriculture, result in the emission of number of pollutants into the atmosphere. Most of these pollutants are sub- sequently oxidized by photochemical reactions to form secondary products which may be considerabl more toxic for humans, animals and plants than the primary emitted substances. Examples /such secondary air pollutants are ozone, peroxy-acetyl nitrate and nitro aromates. In ite of the significance of air pollution, our knowledge of the extent, location, and type of politant emissions as well as of the height (smokestack height) at which these emissions occur is nevertheless quite limited. This is particularly true for volatile organiccompounds inclu- ding number of highly 'carcinogenic or mutagenic components. Documentation of the atmospheric distribution of strongly oxidizing substances such as ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate, hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxides, or acids such as nitric acid (which is extremely phytoto- xic) is also deficient. Aircraft measurements can improve our knowledge base for the emission and distribution of air pollutants. Transport of lar amounts of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides beyond national bounjaries has been established by aircraft measurements.
