The project investigated feasible practical aeration energy co nservation measures that can be implemented at biological nutrient removal activated sludge plants th at not only result in energy use reduction, but also ensure final effluent compliance with discharge regula tions; thus satisfying both the primary objective of wastewater treatment as well as energy conservation . The main objectives of the project were to: Identify and evaluate in detail practically feasible aeration energy conservation measures suitable for typical South African biological nutrient removal activated sludge plant. Measures should also ensure final effluent compliance with discharge standards when implemented. Establish aeration energy use benchmark figures that can be applied for national and international comparison. Conduct knowledge exchange workshops to disseminate project findings. Produce report in the format of manual that can serve as practical guide for local municipalities to develop and carry out aeration energy conservation programs. Two biological nutrient removal activated sludge plants were selected as case studies: () Zeekoegat wastewater treatment plant owned and operated by the City of Tshwane with design capacity of 8 Ml/ average dry weather flow and utilising fine bubbl diffused aeration and (ii) JP Marais wastewater treatment plant operated by the East Rand Water Care Company, with design capacity of 1 Ml/ and utilising surface aeration. iv The scope of work for both plants covered collection and analysis of plant data, determination of 2 baseline energy use and benchmarking, identificati on of feasible aeration energy conservation measures, application of advanced process modelling and simulation to determine optimal process and aeration control strategies and economic evaluation of feasible measures.
