ly influence the property profile of the aluminium in many ways. Within theframeworkoftheobjectivesofthisproject-namely,todemonstratepossibilitiesfor substituting metal coatings made of cadmium, nickel,

silver and gold with superpure alumin- ium - many important properties ofthese metals were compiled and compared. In presenting the

results, note indicating the test method used is always given, where possible, in order to facilitate comparison of the measurementswith

those of third parties. In orderto facilitate the , objective comparison of individual properties of metallic coatings made of aluminium,

cad- mium, nickel, silver and gold, some physical and technological properties were standardised and represented in diagrams, if this seemed possible and sensible in view of the different test and application conditions (Figs. 1 - ). Some properties of electrodeposited superpure aluminium coatings were compared with those of cadmium, silver and gold coatings, in order to demonstrate the reat extent to which they match, and the substitution possibilities which can be derived from tzis fact toachieve the goal of this project (Figs. 2 -). The application profiles make it clear that the various metallic .coatings have numerous matching properties, so that these studies have triggered extensive thought as to the range of applications which exists for aluminium coatings and where the limits of substitution lie. In addition, comparison of the property profiles of metallic cadmium, nickel, silver and gold coatings makes it easier to estimate whether and when these metals can be interchanged. 6 0- 3 . 2 $ 1 do - - 7 6 5 AI Cd Ni Ag Au - - - CI 3WO 2 2 1 1 5 loo Ag Au - - - - - 1 yellow cromated 1 5 AI Cd Ni Ag AI Cd Ni Ag Au Fig. 1 to : Property profiles of metallic coatings . 2 - ) 7 - -. - - CI AI Cd Ni Au AI Ag Cd Au Ni AI* 5 2 *=Ysllow Emmated 1 1 - 5 - - 2 0 Cd AI NI Ag Fig. 2 to
