le to vary the weights supported by theinner and outer shoes to prevent bouncing of the cutter-bar. Therefore, these componentsare made strong and adjustable for proper functioning of the cutter-bar. The reciprocating-action cutter-bars are powered from tractor PTO through tele- scopic shaft for rear-mounted and semimounted mowers; tractor PTO through pair of -belts for front-mounted reapers, side pulley through the -belt for side-mounted reapers, and stationary engine through gear box and -belts for self-propelled reaper. Thecutter-bar speed of mower is kept double that of the reaper and lies between 8 and1 rpm or 1 and 2 cutting strokes per minute ( or knife velocity of 2.8 and3.7 / for an 8-cmstroke length. This speed is more than enough for scissoring action of the knife for crops to fail in pure shear. correctly registered cutter-bar with properly adjusted knife clearance will require little lower value of knife velocity than normal forcutting stems that are weak in bending. Although the side-mounted reapers attached between the front and rear tractor wheels provide better visibility and respond directly to steering, because of complexityin mounting and power transmission system, front-mounted reapers either self-propelled or tractor-operated are more common for harvesting cereal crops. The semimounted and mounted-type cutter-bar attached at the rear of tractor are generally preferred for mowing operation. 2.5.2.2 Cutter-Bar Adjustments Smooth or underserrated cutting edges of the cutter-bar are often resharpened when needed by grinding the beveled top surfaces. As discussed in an earlier section, the underserrated knives perform better for thick-stemmed crops, and the smooth-edged knife or ne saw- tooth (higher teeth per inch) knife will function efciently in cutting grasses. The count-ercutting edges (ledger plates) serrated on the underside are never sharpened, but arereplaced if they do not function properly. Occasional checks of the scissoring elem
